Yesterday I painted a watercolor interpretation of Jacob Ferdinand Voet’s Cardinal de Retz from memory and my pencil sketch. In my image he is a younger man, but still dour.

Quick daily sketches are not meant to be finished paintings. The idea is to practice putting lines and color down each day so that when you get in the studio you have a good repertoire. To relate it to music, it’s like singing Mother Bear every day to practice making harmony and singing as a group. Not a great song, but good practice.

The early painting also is not so masculine. That said, I seem to have a tendency to reverse gender characteristics on my quick sketches. I thought that his sour expression might come from some sort of repentance. Not being Catholic I don’t know about these things.
