Back From Canada…Into Art

We scooted back from Canada as much as one can rush with a two day drive. The return trip was different from eastward bound. We came back via Rogers Pass and Kamloops. Then we ignored the Highway 5 speedy bypass out of Kamloops in favor of the original TransCanada Highway 1 down the Fraser River Canyon. It was a pleasant two days with  beautiful mountains and friendly pikas.

We arrived back in time to make it to the opening of the Olympia Art League show that includes my painting, Yucca. Now we’re getting ready for the next trip…a camping trip in Picasso to Mt. Baker. No time to rest or write more.

Lazy Day

Today we spent the morning watching the Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Finals. After lunch we decided to explore some places we have never been to. First we drove down Highway 1A toward Calgary. This is the old highway and retains the old two-lane charm. That’s about all it has as you leave the mountain soon after leaving Canmore. It wasn’t nearly as exciting as the mountains we are seeing every day.

Next we drove to Banff town to see an art exhibit we had read about in the Banff Springs Hotel. This is one of the old castle-like hotels built during the Victorian era. The art exhibit was in the Mountain Galleries shop in the hotel. It was a wonderful showcase of Canadian artists. Some of my favorites were Alice Helwig, Mel Heath, Graeme Shaw, and Linda Wilder.

We finished our afternoon with a jaunt into the wild lands behind the Banff Springs Golf Course. This is an area we visited and painted in a few years ago and it hasn’t changed. You wind several miles on a gravel road into the woods along the Bow River. We saw wild flowers and elk along the road and stopped for a while at the place we painted before.

On the way out of town we stopped at Bow Falls. This is quite the tourist attraction. It is a small cataract in the middle of Banff town. We walked the trail along the river to the top of the falls and took pictures of Mt. Rundle, the river, surrounding mountains, and a beautiful rainbow in the mists.

Vermillion Lakes

Yesterday was a lazy day at Vermillion Lakes. We did some drawing, chatted with other folks, and enjoyed the sunshine. A very small percentage of visitors to Banff visit this beautiful place just a few kilometers from the town itself. It’s a hidden jewel.

Getting High in the Canadian Rockies

Today began with a thrilling ride on the Lake Louise gondola to the top of the mountain across the valley from Lake Louise. Although we didn’t see any bears, the view across the valley to the mass of mountains that form a backdrop on Lake Louise was magnificent. Everyone assured us that there had been both black bears and grizzlies just an hour or so before we arrived. Yeah, sure! We enjoyed the views and the wildlife interpretive center then headed down for our next stop.

The afternoon was spent at Moraine Lake, a shirt tail cousin of Lake Louise. Moraine Lake sits a little higher and a bit deeper in the mountains. We hiked the shoreline trail to capture as many views as possible of this emerald green lake. This place personifies beauty.

Tonight we will have to complete our daily drawing at home in our condo. We simply were too embroiled in photography to stop to draw. Here are some of my photos from the day.

Painting at Spray Lakes

Today we got a bit of a late start and headed to Spray Lakes in the Kananaskis to a spot we saw yesterday. The view was across one of the lakes to high snow-speckled mountains on the opposite shore. We set up our painting materials and set to work.

Jean set up her pastels and began working on a large view toward the end of the lake. She battled the wind all afternoon and one time the wind managed to dislodge a pastel box. However, little damage was done and she produced a colorful picture that she will complete in our condo out of the wind.

I did a couple of pencil drawings to get acquainted with the scene. Then I sketched the scene lightly on  watercolor paper and began to color it. Another carload of folks came to fish and picnic. After about 15 minutes of painting one of the women came by and asked if I would sell her my painting. I said, “Sure, as soon as it’s finished.” She left early, but her husband came by before leaving to buy the painting for her. That has to be the fastest sale I’ve ever made. Normally I wouldn’t sell a simple study that is meant for only my own edification, but she really wanted a picture of that lake.

Here are a few photos from the day.

A Beautiful Day in The Kananaskis Country

My oil painting class ended Monday, so blog posts can resume. I was simply working too hard for those five days to think about blogging in the evening. Yesterday it stormed here all day. We tried to go out, but were driven back indoors by the weather. I have included one photo taken during that foray outside.

Today was a different story. We woke up to clearing skies and decided to drive up into the Kananaskis area, which has become one of our favorite places here. This wild area covers miles of mountain wilderness. Two provincial parks, many lakes, snow-covered mountains, and abundant wildlife are the attractions here. We weren’t disappointed today.

At the south end of the Kananaskis loop we drove south on Hway 40 to Highwood Pass. This drive has stunning views of the peaks. It was windy and cool at the pass where we stopped for a hike and then settled down to sketch the mountains. On the way back down the Kananaskis loop we stopped at several places to take photographs. What a tremendous day!

A Beautiful Day…A Rainy Day

Yesterday we traveled across Washington into Idaho to Sandpoint. We stayed at the Best Western Edgewater, which (to no one’s surprise) is on the edge of Pend Oreille Lake. It was a warm, sunny day the likes of which we haven’t been seeing in Seattle. Upon arrival we discovered the beach covered with sun worshippers, the lake dotted with sailboats, and the teperature warm enough to sit on our deck. What a treat. I’ve included a few pics from our evening there.

This morning we awoke to a downpour. That continued throughout the day as we drove north into the Canadian Rockies. It continues to rain heavily as we sit in our Worldmark condo in Canmore, Alberta. Dinner and wine completed, we are checking e-mail and reading our Kindles the rest of the evening. Hopefully the weather will be better tomorrow. My painting class begins Thursday.

On The Road Again

English: This breathtaking view of the famous Canadian Rockies Three Sisters Mountain Range is taken from Canmore (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Tomorrow morning we hit the road to the Canadian Rockies. This is a painting trip. We will be staying most of the time at our timeshare condo in Canmore, outside of Banff National Park. The Three Sisters in this photo right behind our condo. If we’re on that side of the building this is our view.

I will be taking a 5-day intensive oil painting workshop with Liz Wiltzen. Jean will be exploring the painting delights of the area. Then we will spend a week together painting at will.

This is not our first visit to Canmore and will not be our last. The Canadian rockies are spectacular. Everywhere you turn there’s a new painting. However, my five day intensive is in the studio. I’ll have to wait to get outdoors.

Keep watching for further updates.
